In Second Grade we used pipe cleaners (or chenille stems) to create the notes that we have learned: quarter notes (ta), half notes (ta-a) and barred eighth notes (titi). Then we worked in groups to create patterns and clapped them together.

Did you have the kids manipulate the pipe cleaners into the note shapes themselves? I do something similar but with popsicles sticks and pipe cleaner circles to create ta-as. I really like your idea of having the kids create the rhythmic values themselves!

I do. We usually review by clapping some rhythms or playing a round of Poison Rhythms. Then I'll have them (as a group) shape the notes. Those 8th notes are tricky! When we break into small groups some kids keep the same note the whole time while others change their each time their group claps through the rhythm. Fun! Its really easy to see who understands too!
DeleteHow many pipe cleaners do you give to each group and do you color code it...like black pipe cleaners quarter notes, red 8th notes, white half, green rest, etc.?
ReplyDeleteI give each student one pipe cleaner. They form it into each note that's called out. When they break into groups they can change it as many times as they like. :-:
