Drumming with "Trepak" from the Nutcracker

Fa la la la laaaa!  Sixth graders have become little drummer boys and girls with this holiday piece.  We reviewed rhythms and wrote some patterns of our own and then we learned a little drumming routine.  It was a blast!

We use plastic coffee cans for drums and tubs with rope handles for our bass drums.  We can ALWAYS use more drums, so send in your plastic coffee cans!

  1. Did you compose the rhythm routine? Would you feel comfortable sharing? What other lessons do you use these "drums" for? I've taught parts of the World Music Drumming curriculum before with 6th grade but this is a cool idea...thanks!

    1. I did a modified version of the one found here on this clever teacher's blog: http://ofortunaorff.blogspot.com/2012/11/bucket-drum-routine-to-trepak-from.html

  2. I really enjoy your blog and am glad you found an idea from my blog! Another one to play along with is to use the poem "Alligator Pie" (swing the eighth notes) with the jazz version of the Overture to the Nutcracker. Listen to the piece and you'll get the idea! Awesome fun! LOVE bucket drumming and my kids enjoyed performing the piece last year at our holiday concert! Thanks again!
